Position Purpose

The Digital Publisher’s role is to publish, analyze and promote content on the HowStuffWorks website. Working with site writers and editors, the Digital Publisher uses web-based tools to publish content to the Web, ensuring its quality, consistency and accuracy. The Digital Publisher may also use content management tools to feature content on the site homepage, channel pages, in-page modules, and other areas across the site. The Digital Publisher also analyzes performance and trends using Google Analytics, Hitwise and other analytics tools. Additionally, the Digital Publisher may copy edit new articles before publication, or source photography for articles to be published.

Qualifications

  • A college degree
  • At least 1 year of experience in a web-based content posting, publishing or content management system, such as WordPress
  • Knowledge of AP Style and Google Analytics preferred

Photo Researcher

Position Purpose

The Photo Researcher’s role is to work with Digital Content Editors to find high-quality, visually captivating artwork for newly published content, to secure that artwork, and to prepare it for use on the website according to HowStuffWorks’ style and standards. The Photo Researcher uses a variety of tools to accomplish this task, including searching stock photography sources, working with in-house artists and designers, and contacting people and organizations to secure permission to use their artwork. The Photo Researcher uses Photoshop and other software to edit and crop artwork and prepare it for publishing on the website.

Qualifications

  • A photography, design or other visual arts degree
  • At least 1 year of experience in a web-based content posting, publishing or content management system, such as WordPress
  • Experience with Photoshop

Web Content Editor

Position Purpose

The Web Content Editor’s primary role is to guarantee the excellence of feature content for HowStuffWorks. The Web Content Editor builds relationships with a network of freelance writers, assigns those writers work based on an editorial calendar, offers direction and guidance until the work is complete, edits the work, sources imagery, and prepares the work for publishing on the HowStuffWorks website. Using tools such as Google Analytics, the Web Content Editor also evaluates the performance of the edited work and uses that knowledge to inform future article ideas and editing decisions. On an ongoing basis, the Web Content Editor pitches new articles and flags existing content for update or revision.

Qualifications

  • At least 3 years' experience working with freelance writers
  • At least 3 years' experience as a writer and editor
  • An undergraduate degree (preferably in English, Journalism or a writing-intensive liberal arts program)
  • Knowledge of AP Style
  • Experience with Google Analytics a plus
