Sony DVP-FX810 portable DVD player

Date Published: 9/14/06

With the DVP-FX810, Sony has produced one of the better-quality budget portable DVD players. The overall construction of the DVP-FX810 feels more solid than many other low-price models, and we're not just talking about products from no-name brands. The hinge on the swivel display does not feel like it will immediately break in the hands of an eager child, and the case is durable enough to withstand the occasional knocks and bumps incurred during frequent travel.

One downside to the robust construction is the DVP-FX810's above-average weight. The DVP-FX810 weighs about 2.25 pounds with the battery attached, although it should be pointed out that the expected battery life is an excellent 5.5 hours, depending on the settings selected. This is enough to watch at least two average-length movies.

The DVP-FX810's 8-inch screen provides a clean picture, and the swivel display rotates a full 360 degrees to give you the perfect viewing angle. While the omission of an antiglare feature boosts the battery life, it makes the screen prone reflection in bright rooms indoors or in strong sun outdoors. The built-in stereo speakers do a fair job, but as with most portable DVD players, the volume and audio quality are greatly improved when listening via headphones.

The DVP-FX810 can double as a home DVD player. The unit lacks progressive scan output, but it does have composite video jacks. The front-panel composite connection is ideal for hooking up a video game console or DV camcorder, and it can alternate between input and output at the flick of a switch. The unit has integrated Dolby Digital decoding, and there is a coaxial digital audio output for routing surround sound signals to a home theater receiver. The unit comes with a full-size remote control, AC adapter and a car power outlet adapter.

The Sony DVP-FX810 portable DVD player is an affordable and durable way to watch movies on the go.

Pros: Long battery life, solid construction, neat swivel-screen design
Cons: Affected by screen glare in bright rooms or outside in sunlight, a little heavy
