PUR 9-Cup Pitcher
Date Published: 11/13/08
The PUR 9-Cup Pitcher is sleek and elegant with clear blue and gray plastic components. The slimline pitcher is designed to fit on most refrigerator doors.
This model has a clear outer pitcher with a gray lid and handle insert, plus a translucent blue plastic inner filtering pitcher, which combine for an appealing visual effect. This pitcher comes with PUR's 2-stage filter, which has been NSF tested and certified to remove 99.9 percent of microbial cysts, cryptosporidium and giardia, as well as reducing a host of other contaminants, such as benzene, cadmium, carbon tetrachloride, lead, copper, mercury, chlorine taste and odor.
Stage 1 is an advanced carbon micro filter, which reduces sediment, chlorine taste and odor, as well as chlorine byproducts and agricultural and industrial pollutants. Stage 1 also contains an ion exchange resin, which reduces lead, mercury, and other heavy metals. Stage 2 is a pleated micro filter, which dramatically reduces microbial cysts.
Installing the filter cartridge is fairly straightforward. You simply need to soak the new cartridge for 15 minutes to saturate and activate the filter media, then twist lock in place in the pour tray. To filter water, you add tap water to the pour tray up to the maximum fill line and let the pitcher rest on your counter or in the refrigerator while the water drains through the filter and into the base of the pitcher. It takes about 7 minutes for an entire pitcher to filter. One batch yields about 5.5 cups of water.
All of the components of this model fit together snugly. We liked the design of the lid, which has a small triangular spout cover with a simple floating hinge that moves out of the way as water is poured.
This model also features a unique locking pour tray. To remove for cleaning, you need to use both hands to disengage the tray. The feature is a bit troublesome the first time you attempt to remove the tray but gets a bit easier with practice; it's a minor inconvenience, especially when you consider that the pour tray will never become dislodged during pouring.
Each filter cartridge lasts up to 1-2 months and can process up to 40 gallons (151 liters) of water. Replacement filters are available for $8.99-$10.99 in your local retail outlet. The cartridge should not be used with hot water.
