Patriot PCSB curved-shaft string trimmer

Date Published: 2/14/07

You wouldn't want to build an eight-hour-a-day lawn-care business around this model, but for occasional backyard maintenance, the Patriot PCSB curved-shaft string trimmer is a pretty solid bet. Particularly for the price, this occasional-use gas-powered trimmer delivers a few notable features, not the least of which is the powerful Briggs & Stratton engine.

The four-cycle 34cc "Fource" engine isn't as versatile as the higher-tech hybrid engines on some higher-priced trimmers, but it delivers an impressive range of power across a wide range of speeds, no matter if you're gunning it to slice through tall grass or keeping it slow and steady to tackle standard trimming tasks. As with other four-cycle engines, this one runs more cleanly than two-cycle models, operates on unmixed fuel, and is designed to last longer with less maintenance. Also, it generates less noise and vibration than a two-cycle engine, especially at lower speeds.

The 56-inch curved shaft offers a good amount of maneuverability, letting you get into tough-to-reach areas or close-up against fence posts or trees. The loop handle can be adjusted to accommodate just about any sized user, and can be slid up or down to improve balance. This unit doesn't come with a shoulder strap, which would be a nice addition to help support the 12.8-pound tool.

The Patriot PCSB curved-shaft string trimmer has a bump-and-feed feature, which makes it easy to release more line by simply tapping the head on the ground. Refilling the spool isn't as simple as some other models make it, though, and requires some winding and dexterity. One other sticking point is the tiny fuel tank, which holds only 10 ounces of gas. That means you'll be stopping to refill it much more frequently than you would with a larger-capacity tank.

The Patriot PCSB curved-shaft string trimmer is covered by a 2-year consumer warranty, and a 90-day commercial warranty.

Pros: Powerful four-cycle engine, price
Cons: Small fuel tank, designed for occasional use

Warranty
90 days, commercial use; 2 years, residential use
